In all my reading yours is almost the only voice addressing the shortfall in babies and the only compassionate one; I thank you.
But nobody seems to mention that large populations can go extinct abruptly, going in a single day from growth to absolutely no live births in mice in the lab, where they clearly were under no economic pressure nor had access to birth control. I have a friend to whom I have explained that one day in the not-too-distant babies will cease. He and I will have prepared and laid up what we shall need but nobody else will be able to make arrangements in the ensuing panic according to the market principle, “If you must panic, panic first.” So we shall likely be the last humans moving about.
Early each morning the self-driving car he will test will pull out of my drive, having learned our habits, and go to the café, where the car doors will open. The car will roll away and park for twenty minutes, then return and open its doors briefly before starting back to my place. The passengers will be two skeletons.
